The International Hydrographic

Organization (IHO)

This intergovernmental organization counts 87

member states with this year’s arrival of Malta
and the small Pacific island state of Vanuatu.

Originally called the International
Hydrographic Bureau (until 1967), the IHO
has been based in Monaco since 1921.
From the beginning its purpose has been
to structure the cooperation among member

states to ensure mapping of the oceans and
the standardization of marine charts
to improve navigational safety.
