Blue carbon is the carbon captured by the ocean and coastal ecosystems. It is stored in biomass or in sediments.
The main ecosystems storing carbon are seagrass beds, mangroves and salt marshes.

A multidisciplinary international
working group met in Monaco
from March 30 to April 1, 2017
to discuss blue carbon evaluation,
in partnership with Surface Ocean-
Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS)
and the Scientific Centre of Monaco
(CSM). It made public its conclusions
during Monaco Ocean Week.
